Hippo Water Roller

The design of the Hippo enables more water to be transported more efficiently than traditional methods. The Hippo, with its large drum capacity of 90 liters / 24 gallons, frees women and children from having to spend a large portion of every day dedicated to collecting water for their households. It was specifically designed for use in tough rural conditions, with a long lifespan of 5 – 7 years, often much longer. Using the Hippo roller results in many social benefits.

Utility Cap. The newly designed Utility Cap allows users to conveniently and hygienically draw water and ensures hygienic storage of clean water. Clean potable water is achieved by fitting a filter onto the Utility Cap.

The irrigation cap-in-cap enables drip irrigation, assisting small-scale farmers to irrigate their crops more efficiently.

Hippo Spaza. The word “Spaza” typically refers to a small shop vendor in Africa. Attaching a specially designed steel frame to the Hippo roller converts it into a simple trolley for transporting products, and then into a stand for displaying the products to be sold.

How does your innovation work?

The Hippo Water Roller, a barrel-shaped container created to transport 90 liters (24 gal) of water at one time, was
purposely designed to alleviate the suffering caused by a lack of access to water. Its innovative design allows water to be placed ‘inside the wheel’ resulting in an effective weight of just 10 kg (22 pounds) on level ground. Approximately five times the usual volume of water can be collected in much less time and with far less effort, transforming water collection from a daily chore to a task performed only a few times a week.
